Stanley and Roses CC41 Up-cycled Unit

"During the war"...as Uncle Albert would say, the government devised a scheme to help those who had been bombed out, or newly wed, to refurnish their homes. A catalogue with certain styles and choices of basic furniture design, made with wooden frames, drawers and handles, with lesser materials,  such as ply on the sides and backs. This cheaper range and style of furniture became known as Utility.

Each piece of furniture had the utility logo stamped onto it, known as the "Two Cheeses".  I recently purchased a cupboard off eBay. A bedroom tallboy, which originally cost £9,5,3. We paid £22:00. The varnish has seen better days and it actually looked like it had survived several wars!

Once sanded, the sides being ply were pretty bad, so out came the paint! The front of the unit has some lovely doors, which I inlaid with a map of a bombed area of London, a little nod to its history.

One of the reasons I love old furniture, is it's history. The life it lived before it came to me. Inside one of the drawers and one the back panel written in chalk are the names of a previous couple. Is it the original couple? Did this couple buy it second hand? who are Stanley and Rose from Aldershot?

Stanley and Rose, whoever you are...your old cupboard has a new life, and takes pride of place in our front room!

The utility scheme was officially closed in 1952, the same year that furniture rationing ceased.

In a bit of a TWIST

I bought this Barley Twist table at auction some time back...its a great size for a smaller home, but my style has changed...so it had to go!

A good sand, woodworm treatment and rub down and we were ready to paint!

Have you ever painted a Barley Twist piece of furniture? It's a NIGHTMARE...especially with thick chalk paint... I used Rust-Oleum.

After more coats of paint than I care to mention and a good wax on both table top and legs it was time to move it on...so someone else can enjoy it!

Being Crafty

I recently had a week off to be lazy and have some crafty "me" time, it didn't really go to plan but with a inspiration from fellow bloggers, crafty magazines and a little trial and error I finally managed to get crafty!

My Nan used to remove all buttons and zips from clothes before throwing them away. Whilst watching a film one evening I twiddled and twirled one of the zips into this floral'esque brooch, which I rather like.

My friend Alison, a print artist and social media teacher and I had a pop at making some earrings, rings and hair slides. We've been collecting unusual objects to continue this idea most of our beads came from Japan which, Alison sourced whilst on a photography project.

This little mosaic was a birthday gift and made a pleasant afternoons distraction to the pouring rain,
plus I have a shiny new coaster!

finally my sewing machine saw action after a little inspiration from Lazy Daisy and
Mary Jane Baxter.  I finally made some head bands from vintage buckles and some vintage pillow
cases as well a some modern cotton. Just for fun I knitted a bow hair slide!

after all this creativity I needed a little rest!

Thursdays Finds

Last Thursday I had coffee and a mouch about with my Mum, we both have Thursdays off so if neither of us has anything planned, we get together for a couple of hours. This week she came to me. Firstly, and quite rightly, we hit the charity shops and then onto lunch…here are my finds

These are so sweet...

How delicious are these? That sunburst lid is just gorgeous...

Now this chappie was love at first sight, my other half thinks it is "disgusting and naff!" (direct quote)
I'm taking votes on this, not trying to sway the vote but I LOVE HIM/HER!

*Thursday was a good day!

*if your interested, Mum bought two pyrex casserole dishes with lids, a pyrex butter dish all in the Chelsea pattern and a vase.

I got this for my Niece…

and left behind a small wooden painted shelf which I think I'll have to go back a get, hope it's still there!

Loose ends...

A while ago when we had sun (!) I spent the afternoon wallpapering a wall in our dining room with this paper, it was a hot steamy day, and I lost the will to live, a quick picture was posted and that was that. I've been waiting for some decent light to show you the finished wall with all the furniture and stuff back in situe,

Chintz Wallpaper - Cath Kidston

We also moved the bookcases to the other side of the room, sold our dresser and found the red cupboard in the above photo on ebay. It didn't look like that went we got it…but that's another post!

That's it, a nice quick post!

Basket Case

I love to go junk-shopping or thrifting as those over the pond call it, either way I love it!
My latest conquest s are these…

How yummy is this? I want this to fill with pegs…

See, how good does that look?

My next buy has had some controversial reviews from Bob…

I quote " that is the most disgusting thing you have ever brought home"…Harsh!

What do you think?

A New Day

I'm trying blogger for the first time, I normally use Typepad but thought I'd see if the grass is greener!

As this my first post I thought I'd just add some pictures to get a feel of how it operates, and you can see what i'm all about!

That's me, what I love and what I get up too!
